Dear younger self,

You're a painter and writer, not a songbird in a gilded cage. Just look at me.

I said, "Look at me."

Better. Right now I could be applying to med schools or cramming for the LSATs. Instead, I'm holding six paintbrushes and ransacking my poor, abused thesaurus for an antonym for 'sellout.'

Loyalist. Huh. Ok. Loyalist it is.

So, dear me, be a loyalist. Not to an institution or set of conventions, but to yourself. Not a simpering lady-in-waiting, but a knight errant. Not a songbird, but a crow.

I am.

Pleased to meet me? You should be.

You will be.
